Will Diablo 3 have a system in place for recognizing in-game achievements? This is a question that pops up from time to time on the Battle.net forums.
Being that the achievement system is in place for Blizzard’s other two hugely popular franchises, Starcraft and World of Warcraft, it seems likely that Diablo 3 will have something similar. Just this past week, a discussion on this subject was spawned in the battle.net forums, prompting a blue response.

That spawned some interesting discussion on the forums, with people weighing in on whether achievements would be worthwhile, and if so, what sorts of achievements should be added.
I think achievements are fine as long as they carry some sort of distinction or esteem. In other words, getting an achievement should really mean something, and thus carry with it a level of status. I’d prefer Blizz avoid a spammy sort of achievement system like that of World of Warcraft’s, and instead implement only a few select achievements into Diablo 3 – ones that aren’t so easy to get.
Some of the proposed D3 achievements listed in the forums were quite good actually. Ones like obtaining the maximum character level, beating the game on all three difficulty levels, and discovering an Easter Egg (e.g., Secret Cow Level). I definitely can see Hard Core mode offering the most highly regarded achievements for the most skilled, daring and experienced; especially those involving PvP.
Achievements would be great if they awarded something apart from just a few points and/or an occasional “good job” frame on your game screen. I’m thinking titles would be where it’s at, and perhaps even some unlocked talents or upgraded items when one completes difficult meta achievements.
